1748 Bellin Map - Plan de la ville de Meaco
J.N. Bellin provided a huge number of maps for L'Abbe Prevost's 'Histoire Generale des Voyages', a 25 volume plus work describing the discoveries, journeys and settlements of seventeenth and early eighteenth century European powers. Many of these maps were issued in Dutch and German as well as French.
This intricate map of the long time capital city of Meaco (modern Kyoto) comes from an early 1748 French octavo edition of "Histoire..". It shows the settlement gathered around the "hereditary Emperor" palace with its gardens and enclosed by circular waterways. Meaco was Japan's capital city for about one thousand years ending in 1868 when Edo (modern Tokyo) became capital. There is a box title at the top with small legend below it
The engraving measures 7.5" by 11", has outline hand colouring, several folds (as issued) and is in good condition but with a little browning along one of the folds.
The map is guaranteed to be over 260 years old.
